SQLBase 11 Concurrency Performance Boost
Many more concurrent users can use SQLBase 11 at the same time. SQLBase 11 introduces
new ways of handling transactions for reading (reporting) and for writing
(update/delete/insert) to dramatically improve user concurrency.
For writing transactions we introduce a new isolation level Read Committed (RC).
This new isolation level is also known as page versioning where writing
transactions do not lock reading transactions in the Read Only and Read
Committed isolation levels. Instead of running into a lock, a select reads an
in memory (before update value) copy of the page that is in the process of
being updated and does not have to wait for a lock to be released before it
can continue. Reporting applications should benefit hugely from this new
isolation level specifically when reports are being run against a
production database that is constantly being updated during the reporting process.
|
The Read Only isolation level of SQLBase 11 has been completely re-designed
and implemented to eliminate the bottle necks, locks and performance degradations
of the previous releases of SQLBase. This new Read Only isolation level will
NEVER obtain locks on indexes or tables. This is particularly important for
applications that rely heavily on reporting or for reporting only activities.
Now these types of activities can be accomplished without performance or locking
impact to the operation of the database.
|
A database load with Read Only mode
enabled is 300% faster in SQLBase 11 compared to SQLBase 9.0.1.
SQLBase 11 TPC-C Benchmark: Write-access transactions up to 2.6 times faster,
reports up to 7 times faster!
The industry standard TPC-C benchmark test simulates a complete environment
where a population of terminal operators executes transactions against a database.
These transactions include entering and delivering orders, recording payments,
checking the status of orders, and monitoring the level of stock at the warehouses
(updates, inserts while running reports).
|
SQLBase 11 performs much better in TPC-C
transaction and reporting than SQLBase 9.0.1. All numbers are in transactions per
minute.
Enabling the SQLBase 11 Read Only isolation level results in hugely increased
transaction throughput from 75 tpm in SQLBase 9.0.1 (RL mode) to 199 tpm in
SQLBase 11 which is a whopping 2.6 times improvement over SQLBase 9.0.1.
|
|
Reports running on the TPC-C database increase from 209 tpm in SQLBase 9.0.1 (RL)
to 1452 tpm in SQLBase 11 using Read Only isolation level. This is an almost
7 times performance increase for reporting solutions in SQLBase 11.
|
Other Concurrency Enhancements
New locking mechanisms and functionality have been added to SQLBase 11.
The intention of the new locking functionality is to improve concurrency and
throughput by reducing or eliminating lock contention including non-application
deadlocks. This functionality includes “LOCK TABLE” and “SET AUTOLOCKTABLE”
statements that can be prepared and executed as well as configuration settings
in the sql.ini file. With AutoLockTable set to SMART non-application deadlocks
will be eliminated.
More new Features and Benefits in SQLBase 11
-
SQLBase 11 features new Auto-Increment columns to allow for automatic
unique key generation.
-
Databases greater than 2 gigabytes can be backed up without segmentation.
-
The SQLBase 11 JDBC driver has been updated to support the JDK 1.4.1 as well
as significant performance and functionality improvements.
-
Very easy deployment through automatic upgrade for SQLBase 7.5.1-9.0.1 databases upon first connect.
We are planning to release SQLBase 11 in late summer this year.
Team Developer 5.1 Partner Summit
A select number of Unify partners were recently invited to the Unify headquarters in Sacramento,
California to preview the upcoming Team Developer 5.1 release. The partners had a chance to look
at the current status of the product and provide feedback on the new release. Everybody was convinced
that Team Developer 5.1 will be a fantastic new release because it allows users to modernize the User
Interface of existing applications with very little effort and brings much-needed features like
improved ActiveX and Web services consumption to Team Developer programmers. All in all, the group was
ecstatic about what they saw and cannot wait to get the product in their own hands.
