Follow Team Developer to .NET

Unify’s Team Developer 6.0, due in 2010, will provide you with all the .NET options you want. By just changing the build target from Win32 to .NET you will be able to leverage your existing investments in TD code on .NET. For .NET targets you get multiple options for deployment, you can use latest technology WPF apps that can have stunning XAML based GUIs and you can deploy them to Windows Desktop or as Browser apps.

TD 6.0 includes a true .NET MSIL compiler -- no migration process involved -- to compile existing and new applications to a variety of .NET build targets.

The new .NET build targets of TD 6.0 include WPF based Desktop and Browser applications. WPF is a new Microsoft .NET technology that allows you to separate the user interface from the application. The user interface of WPF apps is written in XAML an XML based description of the GUI. TD 6.0 generates XAML files for all of the windows of an application. These XAML files can then be edited by designers to apply custom themes or apply any other properties from the rich and powerful XAML language giving TD WPF apps truly outstanding GUI capabilities.

The WPF applications can be deployed as Desktop and as Browser applications including a new thin client for database connectivity based on Microsoft WCF that avoids installing database client software on every user’s machine. Instead, database access is managed on the server side.

TD 6.0 can also build .NET Winform applications which are similar to the existing Win32 apps, but run on the .NET framework.

Using TD 6.0, TD business logic can be compiled into .NET Web Services, including a wizard for deploying the compiled Web Services on IIS. Another option for providing .NET business logic with TD 6.0 is to compile it to a .NET assembly (dll) and consume that dll from other .NET languages like C#. And that is not all. You can also call .NET methods from within TD apps, regardless if you are using a Win32 or a .NET build target.

With TD 6.0:

  • You can create distributed applications using .NET Web Services. TD 6.0 can create the Web Services provider and consumer both running on top of .NET.
  • The client app can run as a .NET desktop app and a .NET browser app.
  • You can easily deploy Web Services to IIS servers, following the RAD approach of making things very easy for the developers.
  • Experienced .NET developers can also use the .NET WCF technology and TD 6.0’s ability to call .NET classes to create distributed applications based on WCF.

North America DevCon 2009

This year, the North America DevCon was held at Unify’s new headquarters in Roseville, Calif. The conference was attended by more than 25 customers from throughout the United States and Canada.

This two-day event kicked off with a welcome message from Unify CEO Todd Wille, followed by a general session on Unify’s Product Roadmap. Team Developer 6.0 was previewed for the first time in North America. Other sessions discussed the latest enhancements in SQLBase 11.6 and Team Developer 5.2; using Unify Q for end user query and data management; and integrating NXJ and Team Developer.

Here are some of the comments from our attendees:

  • “Thank you for your excellent hospitality!”
  • “I enjoyed it, both professionally and personally!”
  • “[The conference] helped a lot to make key decisions on going to TD 5.2, before looking into 6.0.”

Thank you for your input. We certainly valued your comments and look forward to hosting another conference with training sessions next year in North America.

Unify Around the World - Germany Roadshow

Unify partnered with MD Consulting for a two-week roadshow venture throughout Germany. The first week of the roadshow proved to be a tremendous success. Attendees expressed an increased interest in all the new product releases, especially in Team Developer 6.0!

Using a simple TD example, the different compile options were demonstrated: classic TD desktop application, a WinForm app, a WPF desktop app or a WPF browser app (XBAP).

The ability to integrate .NET assemblies into classic Win32 applications or functional classes as .NET assemblies gave developers new options for modernizing existing applications.

Many attendees who might have looked for a strategic reorientation showed a strong interest in all of the options the new Team Developer 6.0 has to offer.

Customers who thought about a porting project have been re-assured that when cost and risk are taken into consideration, Team Developer is the right choice to grow evolutionary into the .NET world with multiple deployment options.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our roadshow stops!

Roadshow stops:

  • Frankfurt, November 16
  • Dortmund, November 17
  • Cologne, November 18
  • Stuttgart, November 19
  • Munich, November 20
  • Zurich, November 23
  • Innsbruck, November 24
  • Linz, November 25

Archiving 101

The rapid growth of storage and the resulting costs are an increasing concern for companies. To manage these costs, companies are examining archiving solutions that reduce cost and increase storage efficiencies.

An archive provides companies with the ability to reduce the storage requirements for information by moving less active information from primary high-cost storage into an archive server resulting in lower cost storage media. Storage savings is achieved by compressing data as it is archived and removing duplicate copies of records (and attachments in the case of email and Instant Messages).

One of the most significant potential savings areas with an archive is e-mail. Every e-mail has at least two copies, one for the sender and one for the receiver. As e-mail is archived, only a single copy of the message is stored, a process known as “Single Instance Storage”. Savings are even greater in the case of an e-mail sent to multiple recipients. Additionally, attached files are only saved once in the archive, regardless of the number of different e-mails to which they may be attached. Storage savings of 40%-65% can be achieved. Depending on an organization’s environment, cost savings may be even greater.

An archive can also provide relief for business users from regulatory compliance and Legal departments who are constantly accessing saved information to assemble evidence for legal discovery, regulatory audits or investigations. With an archive, records can be quickly and accurately retrieved with little or no assistance from IT. With robust search capabilities, the cost for review by counsel can be reduced by 30%-50%. For a company with just 20 legal cases per year and average review costs of $100,000 per case, this amounts to a savings of $600,000 per year.

Unify now offers content archiving for email, legal ediscovery and compliance and reducing expensive storage costs. To learn more, please email us.
