Team Developer 5.2 Highlights

Team Developer 5.2 is slated for release this fall. Come to one of our DevCons to see Team Developer 5.2 live and learn how to leverage its new feature set. Team Developer 5.2 has a powerful and easy-to-use new Grid control. You can now copy existing Table Window code to the Grid control and reuse existing code. The new cell types of the Grid allow for creating visually attractive and easy to use applications.

Use the new Rich Text control to create applications that accept formatted text input and RTF printing. The RTF data can be stored in a database BLOB-field, and Report Builder can print the RTF BLOB contents in a report. Team Developer 5.2 supports the new Windows Server 2008 operating system.

Team Developer 5.2 introduces powerful Web services security including support for the standardized WS-Security model. A number of new security options are available to the developer at application design time and for the application runtime. The Web Services wizard can retrieve password protected wsdl files. At application runtime, Team Developer 5.2 supports three security modes: One, HTTP Basic, simple username/password authentication. Two, HTTP Digest adds encryption to username/password authentication plus three, the full fledged WS-Security standard for comprehensive Web Services security.

SQLBase 11.5 Preview

SQLBase 11.5 brings immediate power to users and database administrators. Multiprocessor support, smart Unicode and the new SQLBase Command Center are the new, powerful features of SQLBase 11.5. Multiprocessor support brings immediate performance increases on multi-core or multi-processor machines. Unicode helps organizations that deliver international software easily. Users not requiring Unicode are not affected by the Unicode additions.

The SQLBase Command Center brings easy to use power features to the database administrator including automated scheduled task execution. SQLBase 11.5 enhances security by allowing long passwords up to 36 characters.

SQLBase 11.5 is made for the latest Windows operating systems like Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Sabertooth Application Migration

The ability to rapidly build and deploy business applications fast and cost-effectively is a must for Team Developer® customers. From the Web Services Consumer in Team Developer 5.1 to the .NET support in future releases, Team Developer meets the current and future needs of the vast majority of its users. Some organizations, however, are requiring standardization and consolidation of their IT systems, including moving applications to the Microsoft .NET platform.

Sabertooth is Unify’s offering to help those Team Developer customers whose organizations are required to standardize on Microsoft. Sabertooth migrates Team Developer applications to C# or VB.NET.

Why Application Migration Beats Porting:

The Answer: True .NET Code The two main options for transitioning to .NET are Migration and Porting. In the migration approach, the goal is to adapt the application into the .NET environment. This involves adopting as many .NET programming conventions and techniques as possible without compromising the compatibility of the application. And this allows .NET programmers to take over the maintenance of the converted code.

In porting, the structure and programming conventions of the original environment are kept and the conversion is limited primarily to syntax. In the porting approach, the application relies on a runtime environment that emulates the original programming environment. This makes it difficult to use standard .NET data types, components and techniques after porting.
