Title: IT Service Manager – Based in: Reston, VA – From: Monsey, NY – Has lived in: Chicago, IL; Norfolk, VA; Burke, VA

How I got to Unify / how I got to my role at Unify:

After six years with the Navy as an Electronics Technician, I came to Northern Virginia to work with the Washington (DC) Metro Authority. It was a “safe” job, but tedious and highly structured. My sister’s friend worked for this dynamic young company called ROLM that was hiring like mad. Of course, ROLM was Siemens Enterprise Communications’ predecessor in North America, ultimately becoming Unify. I joined in 1984 as an on-site Service Technician, then progressed through a series of customer support roles, eventually landing here, in IT support.

What do I do?

I’m responsible for global email services, including mobile email.

What is the best part of my work? What keeps me here?

That’s a great question, because I’ve been here almost thirty years – so there’s a reason. For me, the opportunity to come from a vocational background, with no college, and to progressively work up through the ranks, from a Service Tech to, now, a global role. . . it’s just been such a cool opportunity. It’s been an honor, really. I also have the opportunity to support the CEO and the other senior execs, so to be on a first-name basis with them is also pretty rewarding.

What is a key career lesson to pass on to those considering a career at Unify?

I would say three things. First, most of us here are not locally managed, so you really need to be a self-starter, and have discipline enough to get things done. Second, it’s OK to mistakes as long as you take responsibility and learn from them. And, third, it’s good to be flexible about your environment, because most of us are Anywhere Workers.

An interesting factoid. . .

I have some eclectic interests! I enjoy yoga and working out in general, wood working, skiing and bicycling. I really enjoy cycling. For me, it’s a way to get out, cover some distance, get lost in your thoughts, and really feel like you’ve accomplished something. It’s a great feeling to go out and ride thirty miles!

Title: National Sales Director for Education Vertical – Based in: Boca Raton, FL – From: Miami, FL – Has lived in: Plantation, FL; Atlanta, GA

How I got to Unify / how I got to my role at Unify:

I’m recent to Unify but not to our industry. I was recruited through LinkedIn in February 2013 while working with a Unify partner. It was both a hard decision and an easy one – hard because of all the wonderful relationships with my then employer, but easy because I already knew the Unify people, the solutions, even the accounts. And they made it easy to say yes! Way beyond the “package”, though, it was an opportunity to experience life from the vendor’s side, and to use and grow my skills in new ways.

What do I do?

It’s a great job! I’m responsible for opening and building our newly-formed vertical market in Education, a space where we have the technology and vision to make a significant impact. I like to say I work for the reps, rather than them working for me. I become and do whatever they need to help bring in business. It’s a lot of travel, but they’re such a good group to team with. Also, on a strategic level, I explore new partner relationships, and look for ways to strengthen existing ones. There’s just so much potential.

What is the best part or my work? What keeps me here?

Without a doubt, it’s the people. Especially on the technology side, we have some smart, dedicated folks. For instance, we recently developed a large, complex proof of concept for a potential customer. It was thirty days, and so stimulating. Everyone just pulls together as a team. What fantastic people!

What is a key career lesson to pass on to those considering a career at Unify?

I’m a straight shooter and I do a lot of hiring, so I always tell people two things when they’re considering joining the team. First, the grass is never greener on the other side – every company has challenges, so don’t expect perfection. Good work is always hard work, and if someone is telling you otherwise – run! Second, if you’re up for that hard work and ready to take risks, this is a rewarding place. It’s exciting!

An interesting factoid. . .

I’m a first generation Cuban American, so Spanish is my first language. I’m also fair-skinned with freckles and red hair, so I love going into little Cuban tiendas and listening as they talk about me, never suspecting I understand every word!

Tanya Joiner

Title: Director of Sales Operation – Based in: Reston, VA – From: Springfield, VA – Has lived in: Northern Virginia

How I got to Unify / how I got to my role at Unify:

Sometimes you just know you fit. I joined Unify in 1991, before we were Unify, even before we were Siemens. We were ROLM, at that point a joint venture of IBM and Siemens. I was working as a bank auditor and my neighbor was a ROLM system architect; she was excited about the company and sort of recruited me over the back fence. Obviously, it’s worked out well for everyone!

What do I do?

I’ve seen some significant corporate changes over the years, and have held a lot of different jobs, mostly in operations. Currently, I manage sales operations (which includes commissions, salesforce.com, sales reporting) and channel operations (which supports our partners.)  This position encompasses all the various responsibilities I have had over the years, and my days are never the same – which I love!

What is the best part or my work? What keeps me here?

The best part is the people. I know that sounds like what I’m “supposed” to say, but it’s so true. These are some of the best people I’ve ever known – and I don’t mean just the best co-workers. I mean people. They feel like – they are like – family. We’ve grown up together, we keep up with each other, even people who have moved to other companies. I still get together with a friend every Friday night, and she’s been away for ten years. We all know each other on a personal level, not just a professional level.

What is a key career lesson to pass on to those considering a career at Unify?

Have a sense of humor! While I work hard, I don’t take myself or any situation too seriously, there is always a solution.  And always be open to the next opportunity, because there is so much opportunity here to learn something new.

An interesting factoid. . .

I was once part of the filming of “Throwdown with Bobby Flay”. I got to meet him during a “Pad Thai Throwdown” at Thai Basil in Centreville – and Bobby Flay lost!
